About

Textile artist and teacher, Karen O’Shea

Inspiration

From childhood, I was inspired to draw, make, sew, and use tools to fix things. Primary school introduced me to the potter’s wheel and I dug clay from our garden. My ceramics and life drawing skills were honed at The Wedgwood Institute in the Potteries. Studying for my BA Hons Arts and Crafts, I discovered a love of papermaking and mixed media textiles including stitch.

  • Close-up photo of the knees of a pair of jeans which have had decoratively stitched (boro, French knots, chain stitch) denim patches applied to not just fix but enhance the holes
  • A chunk of silvery weathered driftwood, with a warp of threads and weaving onto the warp in raffia and yarns, in turquoise, pinks, beige and black
  • Photograph of turquoise, pink, purple and green detail of handmade paper with embedded pieces of mussel shell, jetsom and flotsam and seaweed.
  • Red felt bird, with purple flowers and green leaves, overstitched in white chain stitch, French knots and edged with blanket stitch
